Mathematics

In Nursery, we build a strong start in early maths through fun, practical and play-based learning. We follow Master the Curriculum, which complements White Rose Maths, providing a consistent and seamless approach to learning across the school.

Maths happens daily through short inputs, practical activties and real-life experiences, such as counting when we line up, and exploring shapes and sizes in the environment.

Children develop a solid understanding of numbers, focusing on a deep learning of numbers to 5 - including subitising to 3, cardinal principle and number composition - while also practising counting beyond 5 in everyday situations, such as counting how many children are in or sharing resources. Children will also explore patterns and sequencing, shapes, and making comparisons regarding height and length, mass and capacity.

At St. George's, we also use Numberblocks to support and consolidate learning.

Our approach to Mathematics helps children develop curiosity, problem-solving skills and confidence with numbers, preparing them for their next steps in their learning journey.
