History
History at St George's
Intent
At St George’s, our history curriculum is designed to develop pupils’ understanding of the past through a carefully sequenced programme of learning. Pupils develop both historical knowledge and disciplinary skills, enabling them to think and work like historians.
In Early Years, children begin by exploring their own lives and personal histories, developing an understanding of the past and simple chronology. In Key Stage 1, pupils learn about events and people within living memory and explore how life has changed over time. They also study significant individuals and events that have shaped society locally, nationally and globally.
In Key Stage 2, history is taught chronologically so pupils develop a clear sense of historical sequence. Pupils study ancient civilisations such as the Stone Age and Ancient Egypt before progressing to more recent periods such as World War II. This approach helps pupils understand how societies developed and how events across the world were connected.
Implementation
History is taught through a structured sequence of lessons which build on prior knowledge and develop pupils’ understanding over time. Each topic begins with a knowledge organiser that includes key facts, vocabulary and dates to support learning.
Lessons include regular opportunities to revisit previous learning so pupils can strengthen their knowledge and make connections between topics. Pupils are encouraged to think like historians by asking questions, examining sources and exploring evidence.
Where possible, learning is enriched through the use of artefacts, educational visits and visitors to help bring history to life and deepen pupils’ engagement.
Impact
Assessment for learning is used throughout lessons to identify misconceptions and support progress. Pupils are given opportunities for self and peer assessment, which informs future teaching and learning.
As a result, pupils develop a secure understanding of chronology, historical knowledge and enquiry skills. We aim for pupils to leave St George’s with a curiosity about the past and a strong foundation for further historical learning.
