At St. George's Catholic Primary School, the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the essential foundation for every child's learning journey. Guided by our mission statement, "To learn with kindness, respect and friendship through God’s love”, we are committed to nurturing the whole child—spiritually, academically, socially and emotionally. We believe that every child deserves the very best start in life and should feel safe, valued and inspired to achieve their full potential from their very first day with us.
Our ambitious EYFS curriculum is built upon purposeful play, meaningful experiences and high-quality interactions that enable children to become confident, independent and enthusiastic learners. We provide a stimulating, carefully planned environment where children are encouraged to explore, make choices, solve problems and develop a lifelong love of learning. We recognise that children learn best through rich experiences and active engagement, supported by skilled adults who know when to guide, challenge and extend learning.
Through our curriculum, children develop secure foundations across all areas of learning, with a strong emphasis on communication and language, personal, social and emotional development, physical development, early reading, writing and mathematics. Alongside this, daily opportunities for prayer, reflection and the practice of Gospel values help children to develop kindness, respect, resilience and a sense of responsibility for others and for God's world.
We value the unique strengths and interests of every child and work in close partnership with parents and carers to ensure that each child begins their educational journey with confidence, curiosity and a sense of awe and wonder. Our aim is for every child to leave the Early Years as a happy, capable and resilient learner, ready for the next stage of their education and equipped with the knowledge, skills and values they need to flourish.
Intent
At St. George’s Catholic Primary School, we believe every child deserves the very best start to their education. Guided by our mission statement, "To learn with kindness, respect and friendship through God’s love", we provide a nurturing, stimulating and inspiring environment where every child is recognised as a unique individual and encouraged to flourish spiritually, socially, emotionally and academically.
Our intent is to develop confident, curious and resilient learners who have a love of learning and the confidence to explore, question and make independent choices. Through a carefully planned curriculum, purposeful play and high-quality interactions, we develop children's communication and language, build secure foundations across all areas of learning and foster the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need for lifelong learning.
We believe children learn best through meaningful experiences supported by skilled adults who nurture, challenge and extend their thinking. We are committed to ensuring that all children, regardless of their starting points, make excellent progress and leave the Early Years with the confidence, independence and strong foundations needed to succeed in Key Stage 1 and beyond.
Implementation
Our EYFS curriculum is delivered through a carefully planned balance of child-initiated exploration and purposeful adult-led learning. In line with the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, our Nursery and Reception curriculum builds on children's prior experiences, providing a well-sequenced journey that develops the knowledge, skills and vocabulary needed for a successful transition into Key Stage 1.
We provide a stimulating, language-rich environment where high-quality continuous provision enables children to revisit, practise and deepen their learning through purposeful play. Daily opportunities for exploration, investigation and problem-solving encourage children to develop independence, resilience, collaboration and confidence. Carefully planned experiences support the development of communication and language, early reading, phonics, mathematics, gross and fine motor skills, creativity and an understanding of the world.
High-quality interactions are at the heart of our practice. Our skilled practitioners observe children closely, using questioning, modelling and timely intervention to extend thinking, challenge learning and respond to individual interests and needs. Ongoing assessment through observations and interactions ensures teaching remains responsive, allowing children to consolidate learning, make excellent progress and receive appropriate support or challenge.
Planning is adapted to meet the needs of each cohort and individual child, recognising that young children learn in different ways and at different rates. Strong partnerships with parents and carers further enrich children's learning, ensuring consistency between home and school and supporting every child to flourish throughout their Early Years journey.
The EYFS Framework
In the Early Years, children learn through a broad, balanced curriculum built around seven inter-connected areas of learning and development. These areas work together to support every child’s growth, curiosity and independence.
Three Prime Areas form the foundation of all learning and are embedded in everything we do:
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
These are complemented by four Specific Areas, which help to strengthen and apply the skills developed in the prime areas:
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Together, these areas ensure that children experience a rich, play-based curriculum that nurtures their development and prepares them for future learning.
