Religious Education 2025 - 2026
Religious Education at St George's
Following Liverpool Archdiocese guidance, the mission of our Religious Education is to equip our children with the knowledge, understanding and skills to live a Catholic life by knowing and sharing in the love of Jesus and knowing that “As a family in faith, we rejoice, love and grow”.
We aim to develop our children's faith commitment and spirituality, appropriate to their age and capacity, ensuring they are religiously literate young people.
This year we are continuing our transition from using 'Come and See' as a scheme of work, to following the Religious Education Directory, 'To Know you more clearly,' as a model curriculum. In line with guidance from Liverpool Archdiocese, we are gradually implementing 'To know you more clearly,' having started in Early Years (Nursery and Reception), Key Stage 1 (Year 1 and 2) and Year 3 and 4 last year. Following the successful transition for Year 4 last year, we decided that Year 5 would continue using 'To Know you more clearly' ahead of schedule. Year 6 will continue to use 'Come and See' for this academic year.

What is "To Know You More Clearly"?
This curriculum introduces a structured approach to RE, focusing on six key themes, or "branches," that guide students through their spiritual journey following the Liturgical Year. Each branch is explored over a half-term, with a focus on Scripture and its application in life.
The Six Branches:
Creation and Covenant
Prophecy and Promise
Galilee to Jerusalem
Desert to Garden
To the Ends of the Earth
Dialogue and Encounter
These themes are designed to help students hear, believe, celebrate, and live out the Gospel message.
How Will Children Learn?
The curriculum emphasises three key "ways of knowing":
Understand: Deep comprehension of sacred texts, religious beliefs, and sacred rites, and the lives of individuals and communities who are shaped by these.
Discern: Helping the pupils to judge wisely in response to different interpretations of the meaning, significance and implications of what they have understood, and ways of life so they can arrive at justified conclusions about what is true, what is good and what is beautiful.
Respond: Personal reflection with integrity on what has been learned and consider the implications for action in daily life and the world in which they live.
These approaches aim to develop students who are not only knowledgeable but also thoughtful and compassionate in their faith.
They also reflect our school mission statement: To learn with kindness, respect and friendship through God's love.
What Does This Mean for Your Child?
Your child will engage with the new curriculum, exploring each branch through age-appropriate lessons and activities. This will include:
Scripture-based learning: Starting each unit with a focus on relevant Bible passages.
Interactive activities: Discussions, reflections, and projects that encourage personal connection to the material.
Integration with other subjects: Applying Catholic teachings across the curriculum to foster a holistic understanding.
This approach ensures that RE is not just a subject but a lived experience that permeates all aspects of school life.
How Can You Support at Home?
Engage in discussions: Ask your child about what they've learned in RE and share your own thoughts and experiences.
Participate in school events: Attend Masses, assemblies, and other activities that highlight the Catholic faith.
Encourage reflection: Support your child in thinking about how their learning applies to their daily actions and decisions.
If you have any questions, queries or comments, please do not hesitate to make an appointment to speak to your child’s class teacher or speak to our Religious Education leader, Miss Mawtus.
"What is Come and See"?
Year 6 are currently being taught Religious Education through the Come and See programme.
It helps children to explore faith, understand the world around them, and reflect on their own experiences in the light of the teachings of the Church.
How it works:
Each term is built around three themes that are central to life and faith:
The Church – exploring the people of God and how we live in community.
The Sacraments – celebrating the presence of God in special signs and rituals.
Christian Living – responding to how God calls us to live.
Within these themes, children study a different topic every half term, beginning with their own experiences, then relating these to Scripture and the teachings of the Church, before considering how it connects to their daily lives.
In addition to these topics, each year group also studies two other world religions (Judaism and either Islam, Hinduism or Sikhism), helping children grow in respect and understanding for others.
What this means for children:
They learn the stories of the Bible and the teachings of Jesus.
They discover how Catholics live out their faith today.
They are encouraged to think, question and reflect.
They learn to respect other people’s beliefs and traditions.
Partnership with families:
Parents are the first educators in faith. Through “Come and See,” children are encouraged to share what they’ve learned at home.
