At St George's, we follow 'Song of Sounds' phonics scheme, with the nursery children covering stage '0', which follows 'Letters and Sounds' phases 1 and 2.
Phase 1 of Letters and Sounds concentrates on developing children's speaking and listening skills and lays the foundations for the phonic work which starts in Phase 2.
The emphasis during Phase 1 is to get children attuned to the sounds around them and ready to begin developing oral blending and segmenting skills, paving the way for them to make a good start in reading and writing.
The activities introduced in Phase 1 are intended to continue throughout the following phases, as lots of practice is needed before children will become confident in their phonic knowledge and skills.
Phase 1 is divided into seven aspects:
• Aspect 1 –General sound discrimination – environmental
• Aspect 2 –General sound discrimination – instrumental sounds
• Aspect 3 –General sound discrimination – body percussion
• Aspect 4 – Rhythm and rhyme
• Aspect 5 –Alliteration
• Aspect 6 –Voice sounds
• Aspect 7 – Oral blending and segmenting
Below you will find links to videos and games that will help your child develop their listening skills as well as practice their rhyming skills.
The first video is the 'Song of Sounds' song that the children will learn at nursery to help them learn the sounds that each letter of the alphabet makes.
