Year 5

Welcome to Year 5

Spring term

During lockdown, please access the daily learning using Google Classroom. In addition to the daily lessons, children should continue to:

  • read daily (from their own books or using the e-books provided on Oxford Owl).
  • complete one reading comprehension lesson on Reading Eggspress each day.
  • practise their spelling lists on Spelling Shed. These lists will change weekly but your child also needs to practise the spelling lists of  the exception words. These lists can be found at the bottom of this page but your child can also access these on Spelling Shed. To do this, go to more lists, select stage 5 and 6, click on details and then the play button. Some children have not mastered all of the stage 3 and 4 spellings and should continue to practise these too.
  • learn their tables and improve speed of recall by using the games on Maths Shed or Hit the Button.

During this term, we will be basing much of our English work on the novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K.Rowling and the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare. We will also be reading a variety of Ancient Greek myths and legends.

For Maths, we will be using the White Rose scheme.

These are the topics for the Spring term.

  • Multiplication
  • Division
  • Fractions
  • Decimals
  • Percentages

Our Come and See topics are Mission, Memorial Sacrifice and Sacrifice.

In Science lessons we will be learning about life cycles and reproduction.

The Ancient Greeks is our History topic for this term. For Geography our topic is Marvellous Maps.

In our P.E. lessons this term, we will be learning balance and counter balances in gymnastics lessons. We will also be covering dance and football.

Homework

Please listen to your child reading a few pages from their home reading book every night. Children should complete 2 lessons on Reading Eggspress each week at home.

Please help your child to learn the spelling lists. This will really help them with their writing in school. Your child can also use Spelling Shed at home to help them to master these spellings. I will update these lists regularly with the spellings we are covering in class. Most children still need to continue to work on stage 3 and 4 spellings but should be beginning to learn the stage 5 and 6 lists as well.

Maths homework will be set on My Maths. Your child should also use Maths Shed daily to improve their speed at recalling the times tables and number bonds. They can also use the link below to Hit the Button. It is really important that your child knows the times tables well. Please help them to learn these by doing a little with them every day and ensuring that they use these websites to try to beat their scores.

Please work on these spellings at home.

Please learn these tricky words and complete the games on Spelling Shed for these lists.
